Stijn Spierings left out of Lens’ Champions League squad amidst rumours of imminent Toulouse return

Stijn Spierings (27) doesn’t feature in RC Lens’ 25-man UEFA Champions League squad, amidst reports that he could be set for a shock imminent return to Toulouse FC.

Spierings was part of a Toulouse side that won the Coupe de France last season, however, like many of his teammates, his contract expired, and he joined Lens on a free transfer. However, the Dutchman has had a difficult start to life at Lens, with Mohamed Toubache-Ter citing an inability to integrate so far. An imminent departure could even be on the cards, according to AFP journalist Laurent Mazure. A return to Toulouse on loan, through exploiting the ‘joker’ system has been evoked as a possibility.

The former Toulouse midfielder has now been left out of Lens’ Champions League squad, which is perhaps indicative that his future does not lie with Franck Haise’s side. Les Sang et Or have been drawn against Arsenal, Sevilla and PSV in the group stages of the tournament.
