Ulster Football Championship Team of the Year 2020

Ulster Football Championship Team of the Year 2020

Cavan’s Captain Raymond Galligan epitomised the self-belief of the Breffni men throughout the 2020 Ulster Championship - from kicking a 55m free in the last minute of extra time to claim victory in the preliminary round, to pulling off two goal bound saves in the Final.

While 2020 will forever be notorious with the global pandemic and it’s hardship for all, sport found a way to lift our spirits and for the footballers of Cavan to overcome the odds to claim the Anglo-Celt Cup for the first time in 23 years.

Right from the throw-in, the Ulster Championship served up 8 competitive encounters with 10 goals and 223 points, 3-32 of this total coming from the preliminary round game between Cavan and Monaghan - the only fixture to go to extra time in the campaign. Again we saw some intriguing tactical battles and more emerging young talent leading to a repeat of last year’s Championship Final between Cavan and Donegal. The impressive Tír Conaill side were chasing their 6th consecutive title but a relentless team effort deservedly saw the Breffni Men become Ulster Senior Champions.

At Performa Sports we have put together an Ulster SFC Team of the Year based on collated stats from the 2020 Ulster Championship. We have looked at individual player performances using a consistent set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including Kickouts, Attacks, Shots from Play, Scoreable Frees, Tackles, Fouls, Bookings, Assists, as well as, Possessions won and lost. Each KPI was assigned a weighted value ranging from -3 to +3 to add a layer of influence to the impact of the KPI - we have labelled this as a Performa Sports Rating (PSR). This PSR value provides us with a deeper insight into the influence each player has on the pitch.

All of the data was collected using the Performa Sports iPad app which allowed us to produce a data driven team selection.

Let us know what you think. Would you make any changes?

Team selection is based on Performa Sports Rating (PSR) of the Ulster Senior Football Championship.
