Lisdowney - All Ireland Club Hurling 7s Champions 2022

Saturday 16th July marked the eagerly awaited return of the All Ireland Club Hurling 7s following the 3-year Covid-19 enforced absence. The prestigious tournament hosted by Kilmacud Crokes was another action packed exhibition of skill and speed with the hurley and sliotar, and this time it was streamed live on PerformaTV.

In addition to live-stats at the tournament by Performa Sports, our team at PerformaTV produced a stellar production with over 4,000 views of the knockout stage games which included: one Quarter-Final, both Shield and Cup Semi-Finals and Finals.

Back to the action where clubs from Ulster, Leinster and Munster contested the Semi-Final stages of the competition. Up first was the Cup Semi-Finals which began with the hosts Kilmacud Crokes losing out to a powerful Kilkenny side - Lisdowney. The match was a tight affair, but ultimately Crokes’ failure to convert points from play (54% shot conversion rate) proved costly. The second Cup Semi-Final could not have been further from the first contest as Dublin’s O’Tooles secured an empathetic 17-point winning margin in a game that they managed more than double of the amount of Turnovers Won and Total Shots than their opponents Glencar.

Next was the Shield Semi-Finals which began with Tyrone’s Eoghan Ruadh overcoming Louth’s Naomh Moninne by 11-points (total shot conversion rate of 88%). Armagh’s Cuchulainns joined Eoghan Ruadh in the Shield Final to make it an All-Ulster clash as they defeated Leixlip 5-12 v 5-05.

The Finals produced two exciting end to end games, what any fan of any sport wants to see, with both games ending in 1-point victories. First, the All-Ulster tie in the Shield Final saw Armagh’s Cuchulainns just edge their Tyrone neighbours Eoghan Ruadh in a low-scoring affair. The match-up was too close to call shown by the stats, powered by Performa Sports.

Team of the Tournament nominee and Cuchulainns captain Conchubhar O’Doibhillin was arguably the difference between the two sides as he scored 1-05 (8pts), contributing to the +15% Total Shot Conversion rate that the Orchard County side had over their Dungannon counterparts. It was also great to hear Conchubhar O’Doibhillin pay his respects to Eoghan Ruadh’s Damien Casey who sadly passed away recently. The sentiment passed on during his winning speech demonstrates how highly Tyrone’s Casey was regarded by his peers and the spirit in which this tournament is played.

‍The Cup Final to decide the All Ireland Club Hurling 7s Champions was a much higher scoring contest with the game going into extra-time and being settled by a converted free in the dying seconds.

Aidan Tallis and Conn Rock were talismanic figures for their teams throughout the whole tournament and both managed 3 goals in the final showdown, cementing their places in the Team of the Tournament. The stats show an even contest, but despite O’Tooles greater Shot Conversion %, Lisdowney’s extra goal ensured at least one All-Ireland title was heading for Kilkenny.

Performa Sports - All Star Hurling 7s Team 2022

The 2022 All Star Hurling 7s Team is based on collated stats from the latter knockout stages of the tournament (Semi-Finals & Final). Individual player performances were measured using a consistent set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including Puckouts, Shots from Play, Placed Balls, Turnovers Won and Frees Conceded. Each KPI is assigned a weighted value ranging from -3 to +3 to add a layer of influence to the impact of the KPI - we’ve labelled this as a Performa Sports Rating (PSR). This PSR value provides us with a deeper insight into the influence each player has on the pitch. All of the data was collected using the Performa Sports iPad app which allows us to produce a data driven team selection.
