Didier Deschamps on a France return for Paul Pogba: “He still needs time”

In an interview with Téléfoot, Didier Deschamps was asked about his plans for Paul Pogba (30) and why he was excluded from his France squad for the upcoming international break. The France head coach announced his squad for the upcoming international break on Thursday.

When asked why Paul Pogba wasn’t selected for the upcoming EURO 2024 qualifier against Ireland, the France boss replied, “A return for Paul today would be premature, he still needs time“. The Juventus midfielder has struggled chronically with injuries since he signed for the Old Lady on a free transfer but made his return to competitive action in their recent 1-1 draw with Bologna as a 66th-minute substitute.

The former Marseille boss commented on Pogba’s return to competitive action, saying “It’s very good that he already played twenty minutes in Juventus’ latest match“. The former Manchester United midfielder made a return to Juventus action at the back end of last season but then suffered another injury which saw him miss the end of the season and all of the Italian club’s preseason preparations. Pogba has not featured for France since March 2022, when Les Bleus beat South Africa 5-0 in an international friendly.
