According to RMC Sport, French football’s governing body, the Ligue de Football Professionel, is reportedly eyeing up the US market with a proposition to export several “high stakes” matches to the United States. Benjamin Morel, the CEO of LFP Media has reportedly raised the possibility of playing the French Super Cup (Trophée des Champions) on American soil.
In an interview with the Sports Business Journal, Morel explained “We will work closely with our future broadcasting partner to showcase significant matches in the United States. These need to be matches that matter. We want this to be a long-term endeavour, not just occasional exhibition games.”
The move comes at a time when the popularity of Major League Soccer in the US is on the rise, with the idea placing Ligue 1 in the shopwindow for potential TV rights holders. Previously, the French Super Cup has been played away from France, the latest two editions being played in Tel Aviv, Israel. The cup clash, which traditionally opposes the winner of Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France, has also taken place previously in the USA, Canada, Morocco, Tunisia, China, and even Gabon.
