Speaking after Olympique de Marseille’s 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Sunday, defender Samuel Gigot (29) said that the team “lacked balls,” in an interview with Prime Video.
Marseille are in turmoil off the pitch, and struggling on it. Marcelino left the club last week following an insult-ridden meeting between OM’s hierarchy and supporter groups. With threats levelled at the executive level, President Pablo Longoria temporarily stepped back from his role but confirmed that he would remain at the club during a press conference on Friday. He was in attendance at the Parc des Princes on Sunday, and it is unlikely that he will have been delighted with what he witnessed.
Jacques Abardonado is in charge on an interim basis, and he oversaw a 4-0 defeat. Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring before Randal Kolo Muani doubled Les Parisiens’ lead with his first goal for the club. Gonçalo Ramos then scored his first goals for the club in the second half. The defeat is the heaviest of any manager making their debut in the dugout in OM’s history.
Reacting to the defeat, Gigot said, “When you play a Classique with so little desire, it’s not possible! We respected them a bit too much. We lacked balls tonight, it was all of us. It’s a difficult period, we’ll bounce back from it.” Interim manager Abardonado added that he was “very disappointed” with the result, adding “I don’t recognise myself this evening.”
