Claude Makélélé confirms departure from Chelsea

Claude Makélélé has confirmed on his X account that he has left his role as Chelsea FC’s technical mentor for the youth teams. The former France international midfielder took up the position in August 2019 when his former Chelsea teammate, club legend Frank Lampard, was appointed the Blues’ manager for the first time.

On the back of his trophy-laden career as a player, Makélélé embraced a career in management. He held coaching roles at Paris Saint-Germain, Sporting Club Bastia, Swansea and Eupen. After two seasons with the Belgian side, Makelélé returned to Chelsea where he was handed the role of technical mentor to Chelsea’s young players. His Cobham-based job reportedly consisted of “working closely with individual academy players, tracking technical performances in both training and matches as they reach a critical point in their professional development, according to the West London side.

The two-time Premier League winner with José Mourinho’s Chelsea has left the Blues on a mutual agreement. “After four fulfilling years, Chelsea & I decided, by mutual consent, that it‘s time for me to seek a fresh, new challenge. I do want to thank the fans for their affection. Blue will always be the color of my heart; I’ll share more once I’ve set my mind on the next chapter”, Makélélé said on X.
