Petition launched to ban Netflix series on former Marseille president Bernard Tapie

Netflix’s upcoming mini-series on the life of former Olympique de Marseille (OM) president, Bernard Tapie, has stirred up controversy ahead of its release. The show is set to premiere on September 13th, and its depiction of Tapie as a “swindler” has sparked outrage on social media.

As reported by Foot Mercato and RMC Sport, many fans have criticised Netflix for its portrayal of the iconic former OM president, with some even calling for the show to be banned. A petition on change.org has already garnered over 1,300 signatures, with supporters demanding that the program not be aired due to its alleged disrespectful depiction of Tapie and his family.

On Sunday, Sophie Tapie, Bernard Tapie’s daughter, took to Instagram to condemn the use of the term “swindler” to describe her father in the series. She called on her followers to show their support for her family and to denounce the “unfair and unjust” portrayal of Tapie in the show.

Bernard Tapie, a well-known French businessman, was president of OM from 1986 to 1994. During his tenure, he oversaw the team’s rise to prominence in French football, leading them to win several major titles. However, he was later convicted of fraud and served time in prison. Tapie passed away in October 2021, sparking scenes of grieving commemoration for the former Marseille boss.
