Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier jokes that his son would rather walk out the tunnel with Kylian Mbappé

Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier (33) joked that his son would rather walk out with Kylian Mbappé (24) when his side face Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

England international Trippier revealed that his son Jacob is a big fan of the France captain. “He’s obsessed with him, always watching his clips on YouTube,” he said. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid defender added that his son even wanted to walk out with Mbappé, instead of his father when PSG visit St James’ Park for Wednesday’s fixture. “He wanted to walk out with him instead of me!”

He added, “[That is] something I wasn’t happy with […] I said to him, if you get to walk out with him, don’t look at me in the tunnel!” It will be Trippier’s job to keep Mbappé quiet. Despite suffering an ankle injury against Olympique de Marseille, he recovered in time to feature in last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Clermont Foot.

Trippier has fond memories of facing the France captain. “I played against him – I think it might have been his debut game for Monaco – when I was at Tottenham, and I played against him for England on my debut,” said the Newcastle defender during a pre-match press conference

It will be a special night at St James’ Park as Champions League football returns to Newcastle. The Tyneside club marked their return to the competition with a 0-0 draw against AC Milan, whilst PSG began their campaign with victory over Borussia Dortmund.
