Olivier Giroud on his France future: “The objective is to play at EURO 2024”

In an interview Téléfoot, AC Milan and France striker Olivier Giroud (37) sat down to discuss what his future with the French national team looks like and Kylian Mbappé’s threat to his all-time goalscoring record for Les Bleus.

It is common for footballers to retire from international football earlier than they call a complete halt to their professional playing career. For example, Raphaël Varane, at 29, called time on his career with Les Bleus after their World Cup final defeat against Argentina. This isn’t the case for Olivier Giroud who still continues to be a major influence for Les Bleus despite being 37.

When asked by Téléfoot about what his future with the French national team looked like, the Milan striker said: “The objective is to play at the EURO 2024. Clearly, it is not always possible but if we had the opportunity to bring the trophy home – it would be extraordinary.”

At the 2022 World Cup, the former Chelsea striker became Les Bleus’ all-time top goalscorer as he surpassed Thierry Henry’s record. The former Arsenal man is currently out in front as France’s all-time top goalscorer with 54 goals. However, Kylian Mbappé (24) is fast approaching his record after he added another 3 goals to his France tally during the international break to bring his overall tally to 43 goals for Les Bleus.

Téléfoot asked Giroud if he feared Kylian Mbappé would soon surpass his record in the same way he did to Thierry Henry. The France international replied: “If I can still score a few goals to help the team and especially get ahead of Kylian (Mbappé) that would be good.”
