Caen disqualified from Coupe de France for fielding suspended player

Caen have been disqualified from the Coupe de France after fielding a disqualified player in Dieudonné Gaucho, who took part in their 3-0 win over fifth-tier Vire in the eighth round of the cup on Wednesday.

The Normans released a statement accepting the FFF’s decision, but also pointing out that the club had accomodated for multiple postponements, first regarding a temporary stand and then when the pitch had frozen over.

Gaucho, a 21-year-old defensive midfielder, was indeed suspended after picking up three yellow cards while playing for the reserve side in their fourth-tier matches. The club have recognised their error, in that the player, who has two appearances in Ligue 2 this season, was suspended for reserve and senior encounters alike.

Local Normandy side Vire now advance to the round of 64, with a tie against the holders Nantes now lined up. They face the top flight side on January 7.
