Hervé Renard announces Wendie Renard as his France captain

In his press conference this afternoon ahead of his first international break as France Women’s manager, Hervé Renard notably confirmed that Wendie Renard would be his captain, with the Lyon defender making her return to the national team after withdrawing last month over her disagreements with then-coach Corinne Diacre.

Wendie Renard, who had already been captain during Diacre’s reign, will be flanked by two vice-captains. The first will be Paris Saint-Germain defensive midfielder Grace Geyoro, who is joined by Lyon striker Eugénie Le Sommer – the latter back in the France squad after falling out of favour with Diacre, which led to her absence from last summer’s European Championships. The former Saudi Arabia manager indicated that he had made the decision after a discussion with his new backroom staff.

Les Bleues take on Colombia on Friday evening, before facing Canada four days later, in what will be their final chance at preparation before this summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
