Jonathan Clauss to pip Malo Gusto to France starting spot

Jonathan Clauss (31) is set to pip Chelsea’s Malo Gusto (20) to a starting spot in the France XI to face the Netherlands on Friday, according to L’Équipe

Olympique de Marseille right-back Clauss is making his return to the squad following a long absence. The former RC Lens full-back broke into Didier Deschamps’ squad in March 2022, earning his first cap at the age of 29. However, he was omitted from Deschamps’ World Cup squad with Benjamin Pavard, Jules Koundé and Axel Disasi, all centre-backs by trade, favoured in the right-back position.

However, not only has he returned, he will also start against the Netherlands in Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier. He looks set to beat Gusto to the position. The Chelsea full-back was initially called up to the France U21 squad, but following an injury to Koundé, he was promoted to the senior squad for the first time. However, it looks like he’ll have to wait to make his debut.
