Sporting Director David Friio’s Marseille future in doubt

As reported by La Provence and L’Équipethe future of Olympique de Marseille sporting director David Friio is in doubt.

Marseille confirmed the departure of director of football Javier Ribalta on Wednesday. The Spaniard, who was subject to insults and threats in the now-infamous meeting between OM executives and supporter groups, could replaced by Mehdi Benatia, according to L’Équipe.

At the time of confirming Ribalta’s departure Les Phocéens also announced a restructure. Pedro Iriondo will remain at the club as the director in charge of strategy and development. Stéphane Tessier will become general manager, charged with running operations, business, administration, finance, communication and also the sporting elements.

More changes could come. Friio, who joined OM as the head of recruitment in 2020, before being promoted to sporting director in June 2022, could yet leave. His position is the subject of internal discussions at the Ligue 1 club.
