David Friio’s Marseille departure set to be confirmed

According to L’ÉquipeOlympique de Marseille sporting director David Friio is set to leave the Ligue 1 club imminently.

L’Équipe and La Provence revealed last week that Friio’s position was in doubt. Friio joined Les Phocéens as head of recruitment back in 2020 before being promoted to sporting director in June 2022. However, following Javier Ribalta’s departure from Marseille last week, a restructuring took place, and Friio looks set to be a victim of that restructuring.

Friio’s position was the subject of discussions internally at OM last week, and according to L’Équipe, a decision has been made this week. Whilst Friio’s departure has been agreed, the modalities of this departure are yet to be agreed upon. As reported by L’Équipe, former Bayern Munich and Juventus defender Mehdi Benatia, who actually came through the ranks at Marseille, looks likely to return to the club as sporting director. However, an unnamed Italian, with a good knowledge of French football, is also in the running. A decision has not yet been taken.
