The match between Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais has been postponed after Marseille supporters attacked Lyon’s team bus, leaving Fabio Grosso with a bloody facial injury.
The Lyon team bus was stoned by Marseille fans en route to the Stade Vélodrome on Sunday night. The attack left Grosso with a considerable facial injury. According to broadcaster Prime Video Sport, the Italian was left with a 3cm long cut, whilst L’Équipe reported that he is also suffering from a suspected concussion. Lyon’s fan buses were also attacked on the way to the stadium, and as the away section filled up, tensions rose within the stadium too.
The decision to postpone the match was announced by the LFP just minutes before the scheduled 20:45 kick-off time. A press conference was held with referee François Letexier explaining the decision to postpone the match. “A crisis meeting took place, which allowed us to take into account the opinions of the relevant parties following injuries to members of Lyon’s staff. OL did not want the tie to take place. Taking into account OL’s decision and the league’s protocol, the decision was taken not to start the match. It will not take place. The decision has been taken. What happens next will be decided by the relevant authorities,” said Letexier.
This is not the first time that a match between Marseille and Lyon has been stopped. On 21st November 2021, the match between the sides was stopped after Dimitri Payer was struck by a bottle thrown from the stands. On that occasion, OL received a one-point deduction and the match was then played behind closed doors.
