PSG’s Kylian Mbappé likely to be rested to ensure optimum form against Newcastle

L’Équipe are reporting that Kylian Mbappé (24) may be rested for Saturday’s trip to Clermont Foot, with the focus firmly on being at 100% to face Newcastle United in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Mbappé was injured in last weekend’s 4-0 Classique win over Olympique de Marseille. He won the free-kick in the eighth minute, which was converted by Achraf Hakimi. Whilst the France captain soldiered on for a time, he was finally substituted off in the 32nd minute as he struggled to overcome the knock.

Having suffered a ligament distortion to his left ankle, Mbappé did gym work upon his return to training on Wednesday, rather than working with the first-team squad. No risks will be taken with the former AS Monaco academy product. PSG travel to face Ligue 1’s bottom side Clermont Foot on Saturday. Pascal Gastien’s side beat Les Parisiens on the final day of last season, but they have failed to replicate their end-of-season form this campaign, taking just one point from their opening six matches. The objective is for Mbappé to be 100% fit to face Newcastle on Wednesday. PSG beat Borussia Dortmund in their first group-stage game, whilst Newcastle drew against AC Milan at the San Siro.
