Montpellier receive points deduction and forced to replay match against Clermont after Mory Diaw firecracker incident

Montpellier HSC’s match against Clermont Foot was called off earlier this month. As the game entered second-half stoppage time, a firecracker was thrown from the Montpellier crowd and landed at the feet of Clermont goalkeeper Mory Diaw. Shocked, the Senegalese international was stretchered off the pitch and the rest of the players were taken off the field. The game was ultimately abandoned. The LFP’s disciplinary committee has now given their verdict on the incident

At the time of the abandonment, Montpellier were leading Clermont 4-2, but the LFP have ruled that the fixture be replayed in its entirety behind closed doors at the Stade de la Mosson. Les Héraults have also been handed a two-point (one suspended) deduction. There will also be a temporary closure of the Étang de Thau stand for the next two matches. It is from here that the firecracker, which landed at the feet of Diaw, was thrown. These sanctions take effect immediately, concluded the LFP’s communiqué.
